Spaceship Earth Reportedly Set To Reopen With Epcot On July 15 – Indefinite Postponement For Refurbishment

In late February, it was announced that Spaceship Earth was closing in late May for a lengthy refurbishment, but things have changed.

Some good news for everyone is that you will get the chance to enjoy Spaceship Earth in its current form again. The lengthy refurbishment of Epcot’s iconic attraction has been indefinitely postponed.

Spaceship Earth is set to reopen with Epcot on July 15, 2020.

Disney has not yet confirmed this news, but according to a post on the WDWMagic forums, the change has been approved.

“According to the Local 362 Union, the union responsible representing Attractions, answered a question in a Zoom meeting regarding SSE’s rehab HAS been pushed back and WILL reopen with the rest of the park.”

UNITE HERE Local 362 is the union which represents Walt Disney World attraction Cast Members. Hopefully, we will hear confirmation from Disney soon.

The announcement for Spaceship Earth’s refurbishment came three months ago, and it was set to begin on May 26, 2020. Disney figured they gave guests ample time to get in one last ride before the “re-imagining” started, and a “new vision” was put in place.

Of course, that was before a global pandemic shut down the parks in mid-March. As we await news on when they’ll reopen, the official Walt Disney World website appears to be moving ahead with things as scheduled.

Today, the website page for Spaceship Earth changed to say “Closed for Refurbishment.”

It is unknown if this was simply scheduled or if Disney purposely made the change today. There is the possibility that it could be open for a few more months once Epcot reopens if Disney chooses to delay the refurbishment, but we have to wait on that.

This means Spaceship Earth in its current form will close for a time starting that day, and the ideas we are working on inside that geosphere will be well worth the wait. As we shared at last year’s D23 Expo, the next iteration of Spaceship Earth will focus on the story of humanity, following our long journey from prehistoric humans to today brought to life with magic and depth that only Disney can deliver. Many of the moments you know and love will be updated in amazing ways, blended with brand-new scenes to tell a story about our human experience.

As you can see in the image above, the Egypt scene will get a makeover with some incredible lights to make it shine like never before.

New narration will be put into Spaceship Earth as guests witness “how light plays a central role in our shared human journey, coming to life in dynamic ways in a celebration of the magic that’s possible when we all come together. ”

This will be the fourth update for Spaceship Earth in its history since its debut back on October 1, 1982.

Please note that dates are subject to change and can without any notice. These dates are officially listed on Walt Disney World’s refurbishment schedule, but that does not mean they can’t possibly change.
