Being originally from New Orleans, beignets are one of my favorite desserts and treats in the history of ever. Making them even better is when they are Mickey Beignets and shaped like the boss. While at Disney World, these great treats can be found over in Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter.
Mickey Beignets can also be found out in Cafe Orleans in Disneyland.
For those that want to try them now though, you can have your very own Mickey Beignets at home by just following this recipe.
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 packet active instant dry yeast
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup Crisco vegetable shortening oil
- 7 cups all-purpose flour
- powdered sugar
Directions
1.) Pour the entire packet of yeast into a small bowl filled with the warm water. Stir until the yeast dissolves and then pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl.
2.) Add in salt, eggs, sugar, and evaporated milk to the mixture. Blend the ingredients well with an electric mixer.
3.) Add in the all-purpose flour one cup at a time while mixing in between each cup.
4.) Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator to chill for overnight or at least four hours.
5.) Flour a flat surface and pour chilled dough onto it, rolling it out to 1/8″ thickness with a floured rolling pin. You can separate the dough in half and work with only half at a time if that’s easier.
6.) Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into squares. If you’d like to have the Mickey Beignets, use a Mickey Mouse-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the shapes.
NOTE: Always remember to take your leftover dough and roll it back out to get more use.
7.) Heat up your vegetable oil to around 360° or until it smokes a little.
8.) Place each piece of dough into the oil and let it cook until golden brown, and then flip for other side. Both sides combined take 2-4 minutes depending on the temperature of the oil. Just keep an eye on them.
9.) Remove from pan carefully and allow to drain excess grease onto a paper towel-covered plate.
10.) Sprinkle the powdered sugar over the top of the Mickey Beignets. You can use as much or as little as you want here. Serve them hot!
