In the early part of 2012, Big Thunder Mountain went down for about a five-month refurbishment. When 2013 hits, it will be the other big mountain in Frontierland that sees a lengthy shut-down as Splash Mountain will close up shop on January 2, 2013 and not re-open again until March 19 or 20, 2013.
Every year, the attraction closes down for give-or-take a month so that things can be touched up, tweaked, and fixed. 2013 will bring on a much longer refurbishment though, and Doctor Disney says it is long overdue.
The attraction shuts down and has technical issues on an almost daily basis, and there are a number of features inside that need to be fixed. This is necessary, and coming at a down time for the parks.
Just be prepared if you arrive in early 2013 and are looking to ride Splash Mountain…because it isn’t happening.
