Doctor Disney Explains: Getting stopped while on Disney attractions – Why does it happen?

Have you ever been on a Disney attraction and heard this warning:

“Attention! Please remain seated. This ride has stopped temporarily and could resume moving at any time.”

How about this one:

“Playful spooks have interrupted our tour. Please remain seated in your…Doom Buggy. We will proceed in just a moment.”

Well, if you have, then you’ve been on a Walt Disney World attraction when it has stopped or paused or broken down or something close to that. It happens because as magical as Disney is, problems can still occur.

If you ever hear a Cast Member state to another Cast Member that an attraction is “101,” that is simply Disney-speak for it being “down” at the time. When a Cast Member states to another that an attraction is “102,” then it is back up and running.

There are actually a number of reasons that attractions stop, and it isn’t always because they are broken. So with that, let Doctor Disney Explain why attractions stop.

1.) The attraction is broken

This can and does happen. There are mechanics and machines and buttons and all kinds of things that can go wrong. It is common and understandable. It happens.

2.) A guest needing assistance is getting on the attraction

Guests in wheelchairs or that have limited mobility may need attractions to stop or at least pause so that they can get on. The moving belts and cars can sometimes make things a bit difficult, and Cast Members have the ability to slow them down or even stop them so that guests needing assistance can safely get aboard the attraction.

3.) Something fell out

It isn’t often that a Disney attraction will be stopped for someone dropping their hat or sunglasses or a water bottle. But, if it looks as if something important or breakable has fallen out, then the attraction could be stopped. Remember, cameras are focused on every single aspect of those attractions inside and out. Which leads us to…

4.) A guest stood up or got out of their car/omnimover/boat/etc…

You are told to remain seated on numerous and multiple occasions by signs, Cast Members, and recordings. Don’t get up out of your seat and no matter what you do, don’t get out of your attraction car. It is just stupid. Your actions will cause the attraction to be stopped and you or someone else could be hurt severely.

Heed the warnings!

So, don’t get frustrated if an attraction may go stop for a couple minutes or even go “101.” It is bound to happen and it can happen for a number of reasons. Don’t get bent out of shape though and anxious to get moving.

You’re on an attraction Walt Disney World. It’s not that bad when you really think about it.
