Having just completed by 12th sailing aboard the Disney Cruise Line, I’ve started getting more and more questions about happenings aboard the ships. This will be a full week of information regarding the happenings and information of the ships, but let’s start with…
Doctor Disney Explains – Fish Extenders on the Disney Cruise Line
Ever walk around the different floors of the Disney Cruise ships and notice the fish or seahorse hanging outside each door?
Well, those are why the Fish Extenders have their name as they are what the pocket organizers hang from.
You simply get one of these fish extenders via Etsy or eBay or some other site and you can have them customized to your liking. I’ve had a few now and had names put on them for my wedding and other such cruises.
Hang them outside of your door and wait to see what goodies appear.
Yes, if you hang it outside your door…those that play along can come and put gifts, snacks, trinkets, and such in the pockets of your fish extender. These gifts are usually anonymous but can sometimes have a small note wishing you well with the guests’ room number and/or name.
In return, you can give back to those that gave to you (if you know who they are), or pass small gifts out to whomever has a fish extender on their door.
Make sure before you arrive on the ship that you went to the store and got some candy or snacks or small toys or keepsakes to give away. You could even make your own fish extender giveaways if you wish.
There are a few ways to participate in the fish extender fun.
~ If you’re traveling with a large party, have everyone get one and put it outside their doors. Throughout your days on the DCL ship, everyone can give to everyone.
~ Find fish extender parties for your cruise. A lot of cruisers like to set up meet-and-greets online before their sail dates. Once on board, they meet up and exchange room numbers so everyone can participate in the fish extender giveaways.
~ Put your fish extender outside your door and just wait for items to be place while you go around and place gifts in the fish extender pockets of strangers.
Quick question…we are doing our 3rd Disney cruise next year (2015) and just now seeing the fish extender and want to do it. I have been doing some research on it and somewhere read that you need to sign up to participate in it. But I see here that you said there is no need to. So is it better to sign up or just wing it. I really just want to do it for the fun. Thanks
You do NOT need to sign up to do it. We have never signed up for it as we’ve either done it with friends/family on board or just randomly and had positive experiences with both. Now, not signing up for one does offer the risk of not getting anything in return. Room location could really hinder that because if your room isn’t passed by a lot of people, then some may never see your fish extender. It all kind of depends on how comfortable you feel with people playing along.
Excited to go on our first cruise Saturday. Thank you for this information. We can’t sign up and when I try the sight is down. I’m relieved we can still participate. So excited!!! Time to shop and craft!
