Disney and Angelina Jolie scared up a winner with “Maleficent” as the tale of the villain took first place at the box office in its opening weekend, and by a large margin.
Disney’s “Maleficent” took home an estimated $70 million at the domestic box office after opening on Friday, May 30, 2014.
Final numbers will be out on Monday.
Coming in second with another big week was “X-Men: Days of Future Past” which took in $32.6 million in its second week of release. Another new film, “A Million Ways to Die in the West” finished in third with just over $17 million.
On Friday, “Maleficent” took in $24.2 million which was right on pace with the opening of “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” So far, “Maleficent” has pulled in over $170 million worldwide.
