Review of ‘Ohana’s New Menu at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

ohanaThe changes that were reported as coming to ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Resort are now in place, and the new menu items aren’t huge in quantity, but  it does alter things a bit. Doctor Disney headed to ‘Ohana this weekend and decided to not only enjoy one of his top three restaurants on all of Disney property, but also check out the new items and changes that have been made.

Many have not been happy with the removal of the chicken skewers, but unconfirmed reports have them being gone due to “issues.”

We still don’t know what those “issues” were, but the chicken skewers are indeed gone.

Upon sitting, the ‘Ohana Pineapple Coconut Bread was delivered to the table, and it was phenomenal as usual.

The other item listed as a “Starter” is the Mixed Greens Salad with a Lilkoi dressing, and it has a strong citrus-flavor and is also very good.

Next up are the Appetizers which are brought at the same time, but let’s first check out the Pork Dumplings tossed in a Garlic Ginger Sauce. These are still the same as they used to be, and very good as always.

They used to be served with noodles and vegetables, but those were moved on the menu.

Now, the first new menu item at ‘Ohana are the Vegetable Lettuce Wraps with a Hoisin Ginger Sauce. They come deconstructed and you make them yourselves. The filling is carrot slivers, lima beans, and well, I’ll be honest…they weren’t good.

My wife agrees as the filling is a bit spicy, but it is also ice cold. Not room temperature, but ice cold and just doesn’t mesh well and is not appetizing at all.

Next up are the Entrees all brought at the same time and they include the Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings, Stir-Fried Vegetables, and Noodles tossed in a Teriyaki Sauce.

Again, these are dishes that remain the same and continue to be awesome and incredible.

The main course is up next and they are the Skewers which are Sweet and Sour Pork Loin, Szechuan Sirloin Steak, and Spicy Grill Peel-n-Eat Shrimp. The chicken skewers are indeed gone at ‘Ohana, and only these three remain.

The shrimp and steak remain my favorite, but they are all fantastic. As always, they are all-you-can-eat and they will keep on bringing them as long as you want them.

Finally, the dessert. Another new addition to the ‘Ohana menu is the child’s dessert which is a Brownie with marshmallow topping and M&Ms. My pic of this didn’t come out well after getting home, but it’s small. It is actually is about the size of mini-cupcake and quite good.

The other dessert is still the same, but there is no change it whatsoever. It is, of course, the ‘Ohana Bread Pudding a la mode topped with Caramel Sauce and Bananas.

Ladies and gentlemen, ‘Ohana has not become a bad restaurant at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. The changes have not made it awful by any stretch of the imagination, and it’s still one of my favorites.

Yes, there are a lot of people that are unhappy with the removal of the chicken skewers, and Disney wouldn’t do it without a good and legitimate reason. It’s understandable that you wouldn’t be happy about it, but there is nothing that can be done now.

Unfortunately, the lettuce wraps are not good. It’s a shame that this was the new addition and maybe it was done to primarily get another vegetarian dish on the menu, but it’s not appetizing and it’s a shame.

Overall, ‘Ohana is still a premiere restaurant at Walt Disney World and one I’ll continue to frequent.
