The Main Street USA hub at Magic Kingdom is under serious construction right now as the refurbishment announced last February continues. There will be a second circle added that will add more parade and firework locations while also helping traffic flow. Right now, the hub looks extremely different as virtually everything is gone, but it will return.
Yes, virtually all greenery in the hub area has been removed during the refurbishment. That big box in the middle is surrounding and protecting the Partners statue. Work is set to be completed sometime in 2015, but there has been no exact date as of yet.
The construction has played a big part in the parade and firework FASTPass+ viewing areas being moved.
