One of the most anticipated new things to look forward to at Walt Disney World is the Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant called Skipper Canteen. It will be opening at Magic Kingdom later this month, and some new details have now been unveiled.
On Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015, there was a Cast Member preview of the Skipper Canteen, and a few details have come my way via some very reliable sources.
NOTE: Please remember that since the restaurant is not yet open, any of these details can and do have the possibility of changing. Some may be altered or some things may not be in place at all for when Skipper Canteen opens.
With that out of the way, let’s see what new things have been revealed.
~ The Skipper Canteen wills eat around 220 Guests at any given time, and there will be multiple rooms to sit in. For comparison, Be Our Guest Restaurant is said to have a capacity of 340 Guests for dinner.
Two things of note is that the main dining area is said to be reminiscent of the Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. Another thing is that there is a “SEAcret” room behind a bookshelf which I didn’t get a lot of info on, but it’s said to be awesome.
~ The menu will include such items as:
- Steak with Yuca Fries
- A Stir Fry dish or two
- Char Siu Pork
- Falafel
- Cucumber Salsa
- Pineapple Coconut Cake
~ Two signature drinks will be on the menu as well, and they will be available to buy in two different souvenir cups specific to the Skipper Canteen.
- Schweitzer Slushie
- Punchline Punch
~ Opening date…biggest question…when is it happening?
There is still construction going on around the edges of the Skipper Canteen restaurant and one Cast Member I spoke to said they would be “shocked” if it it opened this week.
Skipper Canteen is expected to open sometime “later” in December and begin as walk-ups only and then Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) are said to become available after that.
Here are the first details revealed about Skipper Canteen from mid-October:
- Scheduled to open in “mid-December,” but a soft opening is possible
- Asian, African, and South American-inspired cuisine
- One menu – à la carte style
- Table service for lunch and dinner – Will not be open for breakfast
- Menu prices will not change from lunch to dinner
- Full table-service/sit-down restaurant (Likely one table-service credit, but that remains to be decided)
- The atmosphere will be in the same feel as 50’s Prime Time Cafe and Whispering Canyon.
Looks like Skipper Canteen is going to be full of some corny jokes and good times.
Remember, things can change and have been known to do so. Until the restaurant actually opens, anything can happen.
We still don’t have an exact opening date and we still don’t know when Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) are going to become available for booking. Hopefully, we know more soon but a lot of info is being kept on the down low right now about Skipper Canteen.
Once more is known on when Skipper Canteen is to open or for any Disney vacations and dining, get in touch with My Mickey Vacation so they can take all the stress out of planning and create the magic for you.
