After Solo: A Star Wars Story ended up not doing nearly as well at the box office as Disney had hoped, it looked like it may be a while until the next movie in the franchise. Right now, Lucasfilm has apparently put the spin-off films on hold until further notice.
According to a report from Collider, Lucasfilm is putting any and all plans for more Star Wars Story spin-off movies on hold for now. All focus and attention is going to Star Wars: Episode IX which will continue the official saga and be the third film in the new trilogy.
There had been talks for films based on both Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but that was before the release of Solo in May. Since opening four weeks ago, Solo has taken in $196 million at the domestic box office and more than $343 million worldwide.
While that total isn’t horrible, it is a lot less than what the studio was hoping to bring in. Rogue One ended up bringing in more than $424 million in the same amount of time as Solo and it’s hard not to notice that discrepancy.
It isn’t known when exactly it is going to happen, but Lucasfilm has also announced a brand new trilogy to happen after Episode IX and their focus will go there as well. Sure, it is possible that the Star Wars Story spin-off movies could return in the future, but for now, they’re on hiatus.
