On Aug. 1, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX is set to begin filming at London’s Pinewood Studios and J.J. Abrams is back to direct the final chapter of this trilogy. Now, we have had the cast announced for the film and with it being called the “Skywalker saga,” it seems only right that a couple big names are returning.
Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
As you can see, Mark Hamill is back and will once again take on the role of Luke Skywalker despite the ending of The Last Jedi.
Also, Carrie Fisher will once again play the role of Leia Organa even though she has since passed away. Lucasfilm and Abrams have always said that they will not replace her with CGI or recast the role, but they will use previously unreleased footage which was shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” says Abrams. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”
Legendary composer John Williams is back to score Episode IX just as he has for every Star Wars film going all the way back to A New Hope in 1977.
There is no exact release date for Star Wars: Episode IX as of yet, but it will hit theaters in December of 2019.
