For months, there has been a labor dispute going on between Disneyland Resort and a union representing thousands of Cast Members. On Thursday, a vote happened to put in place a three-year contract which will raise hourly wages by as much as 20 percent immediately and another 13 percent by January.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, a secret ballot was held throughout the day at Disneyland’s Lincoln Theater which was in favor of raising the hourly minimum wage. Cast Members voting included candy makers, custodians, retail, attractions, and others.
Currently, the hourly rate is $11 and it is going to be raised to $13.25 right away and will go up to $15 by January. This is a full three years ahead of when the minimum wage in all of California is scheduled to hit that level.
By June of 2020, California’s minimum wage will rise to $15.50 per hour.
There are going to be more modest increases in wages for truck drivers and other Disneyland Resort Cast Members with higher salaries. Those making $20 an hour will have a wage increase of 60 cents per hour right away and another 75 cents in January.
By June of 2020, California’s hourly pay will increase to $21.99.
Making matters even better is that all Cast Members will get a retroactive pay increase of three percent or 50 cents an hour, depending on whichever is great, dating back to June 17, 2018.
“This agreement sets a new bar with minimum wages that are among the highest in the country,” Disneyland president Josh D’Amaro said in a statement.
Disneyland has around 30,000 workers employed in California, but the majority of them are hourly workers who are represented by unions. Disney has stated that the wages for other hourly workers are going to be negotiated on a separate basis.
