Earlier this year, we reported that the Disney Parks are in the process of getting rid of virtually all plastics which that includes straws, drink lids, and shopping bags. Well, the loss of old-school shopping bags is on the way out soon as World of Disney is about to begin selling reusable bags for guests to shop and getting rid of plastic.
The World of Disney store locations at both Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort and Disney Springs in Walt Disney World have been completely renovated. The stores have almost all sections open now, and their grand re-openings are set for this weekend.
Beginning with the grand opening on both coasts, it has been confirmed by Disney that the World of Disney stores will be the first to feature reusable merchandise shopping bags. This is a sure sign that plastic bags are heading out.
Mae of 80 percent recycled materials, Disney is looking to help with their environmental efforts and the reduction of plastic waste.
The bags will cost $1 each, but guests heading to World of Disney at Disney Springs this weekend can receive one for free with any purchase.
Join us for the Grand Reveal of World of Disney at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, 10/27, to see the all-new magic in store! Guests who make a purchase between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. will receive a complimentary small sized reusable bag as part of the celebration. Details: pic.twitter.com/6b30XOJ6Fs

As of this writing, there has been no word on if the World of Disney store at Downtown Disney will be doing the same.
Disney is looking at eliminating plastic almost entirely from their parks. Single-use plastic straws are now only available by request in many dining locations. The plastic lids on drinks are also being taken off and removed from many of the restaurants.
It has not yet known if plastic shopping bags will be available as an alternative option to the reusable shopping bags. Disney did state earlier this year: ” We will also reduce the number of plastic shopping bags in our owned and operated parks and on our cruise line, offering guests the option to purchase reusable bags at a nominal price.”

Does this include items being sent back to the resort? We’ve had staff staple bags shut, with a reusable bag I wouldn’t want it stapled shut and it seems like that could mean purchasing several reusable bags. It seems like their heart is in the right place but I see potential for a lot more waste.
