Even though Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that the Star Wars films would take a hiatus after The Last Skywalker, it appears as if the break won’t be very long. Disney and Lucasfilm have now announced three new Star Wars films are going to be made and the Avatar sequels are being put on the back shelf.
On Tuesday, Disney updated the theatrical release schedules for all of its studios, and there were some interesting moves made. Three new Star Wars films are on the slate and they are going to come out not long after the nine-film saga concludes with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters this December.

It appears as if Disney and Lucasfilm want to keep that Christmas-time release date for its franchise of films. This is certainly not going to hurt the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge lands opening in Disneyland and Walt Disney World this year.
Not much is known about the new films, but it has been revealed in the past that Rian Johnson is writing his own trilogy. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the team leading Game of Thrones, are also writing their own.
With this announcement of new Star Wars films on the way, James Cameron’s sequels to Avatar have been delayed again at Fox. Here are the new dates for the four sequels:
- Avatar 2: From Dec. 18, 2020 to Dec. 17, 2021
- Avatar 3: From December 17, 2021 to December 22, 2023
- Avatar 4: From December 20, 2024 t0 December 19, 2025
- Avatar 5: Due out December 17, 2027
