Sony and Disney have had a partnership for a while now and it has proven to be quite lucrative for both, but that is coming to an end. Unable to come to terms on a new deal, Marvel Studios and president Kevin Feige are going to have nothing more to do with the Spider-Man franchise.
According to Deadline, this back-and-forth between Sony Pictures and Disney has been going on for months. It has now come to a point where Feige and Marvel Studios will no longer be involved in the Spider-Man movie universe.
There is a lot of webbing here, but it all comes down to money, and it’s easy to understand why both sides refused to give ground. Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat, and I don’t believe they even came back to the table to figure out a compromise. Led by Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra, Sony just simply didn’t want to share its biggest franchise. Sony proposed keeping the arrangement going under the current terms where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first dollar gross, sources said. Disney refused.
Two more Spider-Man films are in the works as of this time, and they will have Jon Watts in as director with Tom Holland in the lead role. Unless something changes between Disney and Sony, Feige won’t be a creative producer on either one of those movies.
No matter what the case may be, it is kind of hard to understand Sony walking away from this deal with Disney and Marvel Studios. Spider-Man: Homecoming pulled in $880 million worldwide in 2017 while Spider-Man: Far From Home has generated $1.1 billion worldwide after its release back in July.
Both sides really wanted the Spider-Man relationship to continue, but neither likes what the other is asking for.
