Today is the first day that Shanghai Disneyland has been open again after being closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Disney CEO Bob Chapek appeared on CNBC today to discuss that occasion as well as how things may go with the reopening of Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
Neither Walt Disney World nor Disneyland have a set reopening date, and both locations are no longer accepting new reservations until July. Chapek stated that a lot will depend on how Shanghai Disneyland’s reopening goes.
Very few tickets remain for the entire week as the advance reservations are almost entirely booked. The plan is increase attendance in the park by 5,000 guests per week up to the cap of 24,000 which is set by the government of Shanghai. At that point, Disney will work with the government on how to allow more guests in.
The ability to raise attendance in the parks will depend a lot on how guests react to and deal with the new guidelines.
As for Walt Disney World and Disneyland, along with other international parks, Chapek would not guess on opening dates. The information given forth by medical professionals and government officials will have a big say in those dates, as will the attendance in local hospitals near the parks.
Chapek went on to say that social distancing and masks/face coverings are expected to be fully required by both guests and Cast Members. He knows there will have to be an adjustment for everyone as it will be difficult to wear a mask in the hot and humid temperatures of the warmer months, especially in Florida.
The guidelines and regulations for the domestic parks have not been made official as of yet. Disney is still working on those and will release them once more is known.
The reopening of Disney Springs on May 20, 2020, will also go a long way in how things may go with the parks opening their gates again.

The really difficult thing about guests wearing masks is the fact that Disney has removed over 95% of the benches from the parks. At the Magic Kingdom, the number is even higher. I was told by a vice president at one of the parks that the fake rock formations were designed for people to lean on and rest. Not the correct answer to give a senior citizen! With very little shade and very little seating, it will be very difficult to spend the day at Walt Disney World!
