It has been one month since the reopening of the theme parks of Walt Disney World, and many stage shows have stayed dark. That will be changing soon as the Actors’ Equity Association has reached an understanding for performers to return.
Shows such as Festival of The Lion King, the Frozen Sing-Along, Indiana Jones Stunt Show Spectacular, Finding Nemo – The Musical, and Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage have not operated since the parks reopened in mid-July.
Equity actors and their association have not been able to come to a safe agreement with Walt Disney World to merit their return. On Wednesday, it was revealed that the union will soon have performers return to work at WDW.
This news comes on the heels of word that Walt Disney World has agreed to provide space for an on-site center for COVID testing. It will be located near Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and it will provide free testing for Cast Members, Operating Participant employees, and family members.
“We have been consistent that testing is an important part of ensuring a safe workplace for Equity performers, and today, I’m pleased to see that Disney World has agreed,” said Kate Shindle, President of Actors’ Equity Association. “With the news that Disney will make testing available for Equity performers and others in the park, I’m happy to announce that Equity’s executive committee has signed a memorandum of understanding with Disney for Equity performers to return.”
Please note that reopening dates for Festival of The Lion King, the Frozen Sing-Along, and others are not yet known. All that we know is that this is a good sign, and performers are heading back to Walt Disney World soon for work.
