Walt Disney World began testing facial recognition technology at the entrance of Magic Kingdom on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. It is possible that, if successful, this could become permanent as Disney moves toward an entirely touchless entry system.
Ever since the Walt Disney World parks reopened in July, the finger-touch scanners have not been operational. Of course, this is due to everywhere wanting to have as little contact as possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Disney is now looking to incorporate facial recognition as part of their park entry process. The testing was limited on Tuesday morning, but it will continue on randomly and likely branch out over time.
Until a full roll-out possibly occurs, guests will enter into a determined entry lane with the facial recognition. Guests will be advised to move all obstructions such as sunglasses and/or hats before moving up to the facial recognition location.
Upon entering the zone, guests will then place their MagicBand, park ticket, or mobile device (with tickets active) close to the scanner. This will active the facial recognition software and capture an image of the guest’s face.
This image will be converted into an individual number that is assigned to the park ticket.
Disney has already gone on record to say that images are only going to be stored for a period of 30 days. Entry after that will record a new image when the guest enters a park.
