Warner Bros. is partnering up with The Walt Disney Company to bring forth an idea that will never die. A new project is being worked on between the two studios to create a recreation series based on The Goonies.
The cult classic film is still a favorite to many who grew up with it and newer generations. According to Variety, the series will take a substitute teacher and a few students who look to make a shot-for-shot remake of The Goonies.
The pilot was originally in development at FOX, but the project, written by Sarah Watson, was turned down. FOX felt as if it wasn’t a proper fit for adult audiences, but Disney+ begs to differ.
The series will be titled Our Time, and fans of the film know that is a line from the famous speech given by Mikey (Sean Astin). The companies of director Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg are working to bring this idea to life.
Warner Bros. Executive VP and head of development is excited about the project.
“Sarah worked nonstop to deliver this incredible script, we had our table read, and then the world shut down for COVID. So we came back many months later and finished the beautiful pilot, and it was an incredible cast, but unfortunately a little bit too young for Fox. And so we immediately swung into high gear and hit the town with it. We did not yet have anything in development at Disney Plus. It’s been another example of being able to carve a pathway where there wasn’t one by virtue of a great story, a great pilot, a great series. The deal has taken a while to make, but we’re really excited to be moving forward.”
There is no cast yet known for the series or a release date for Our Time, but this is exciting.
