Disney has released the first clip from The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar which is a short primetime movie that will air on the Disney Channel in November. It keeps the story of The Lion King going and will lead into a new animated series coming in early 2016.
The new movie will focus on Kion, the second-born son of Simba and Nala. Kion will take the leader role of a group of animals known as the Lion Guard. They will have the task of protecting the Pride Lands.
In the first clip, Kion is shown as the focus as is his friend Bunga, a honey-badger who is being tormented by some familiar-looking hyenas.
This is not going to be just some second-rate Disney movie either. The Lion Guard has quite an impressive voice cast that is sure to bring even more fans in to watch.
James Earl Jones and Ernie Sabella will reprise their roles from “The Lion King” as Mufasa and Pumbaa, respectively. Rob Lowe will give voice to Simba and Gabrielle Union will play his wife, Nala. Max Charles stars as Kion. Joshua Rush will give voice to Kion’s best friend Bunga, a fearless honey badger. Atticus Shaffer plays Ono, an intellectual egret. Diamond White will play Fuli, a confident cheetah. Dusan Brown will voice Beshte, a good-spirited hippo.
It’s kind of curious that Mufasa is going to be back as many know…well, many know what happened to him in The Lion King. Still, it’s going to be great hearing James Earl Jones back as the booming voice that may end up coming as a spirit in the clouds.
A preview of the film will happen at the D23 Expo this weekend in Anaheim.
The Lion Guard isn’t the only new old-school project coming from Disney. Disney has already ordered a Duck Tales reboot for Disney XD as well as an animated series of Tangled.
