Here Is The Reason Why Disney Hasn’t Made ‘National Treasure 3’

There have been two movies in the National Treasure franchise and the last one was released in 2007, but what about all the rumors that a third film was coming? Well, director Jon Turteltaub believes he knows the reason why Disney never went through with it.

national treasure 3 disney never happened

Director Jon Turteltaub recently spoke with Collider to discuss a number of topics and as is par for the course, National Treasure was brought up. He believes the franchise should complete things with a trilogy, but he said that when all is said and done…money is the issue.

“When National Treasure first got made, there was a lot more money to go around. Everybody got paid nicely. The problem with getting the third one made isn’t the people who are getting paid saying, ‘I’m not doing it unless you pay me a lot!’ It’s really that Disney feels they have other films they want to make that they think will make them more money.”

The franchise starring Nicolas Cage, Justin Bartha, Jon Voigt, and Diane Kruger made more than $800 million at the worldwide box office. National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets have developed a huge cult following, but Turteltaub states that Disney doesn’t think people would be interested enough in a third film.

“I think they’re wrong. I think they’re right about the movies they’re making; they’re obviously doing a really good job at making great films. I just think this would be one of them, and they don’t quite realize how much the Internet is begging for a third National Treasure.”

All hope is not lost as Turteltaub admitted that a script for a third National Treasure movie was being developed even though Disney doesn’t seem interested.
