An unexpected penalty was handed out to four members of a southwest Missouri family after they were caught in a poaching case over a period of many years. During this poaching case, the family illegally killed hundreds of deer.
As part of their punishment, repeated viewings of Disney’s animated classic Bambi were ordered in the sentence.
Conservation agents have said that this case is one of the largest cases of deer poaching in the history of Missouri.
“The deer were trophy bucks taken illegally, mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste,” said Lawrence County’s prosecuting attorney, Don Trotter.
Due to the severity of the crimes, Judge Robert George of Missouri’s 39th Judicial Circuit added a special order to the sentence of one of the poachers. That particular criminal must watch Disney’s Bambi repeatedly.

David Berry Jr. was ordered to watch Bambi at least once a month during his year-long jail sentence.
Judge George ordered that the first viewing of Bambi must take place on or before December 23, 2018. At least one such viewing must take place “each month thereafter” while incarcerated in the county jail.
