Big Thunder Mountain has Quick Soft Opening – Details on Changes to Attraction

Big Thunder Mountain at the Magic Kingdom has been under refurbishment since January and is preparing to be reopened to the public on Monday, May 28, 2012, but a “soft opening” happened today for a very short amount of time. And sadly…the falling rocks are gone.

All of the refurb walls around BTM are down and gone. The attraction opened unannounced for guests this afternoon, but closed down after only 35 minutes due to “technical difficulties.” Cast Members in the area advised me that another possible “soft opening” on Sunday, but of course that isn’t confirmed. Things can change of course, but the reopening of Thunder Mountain is still set for Monday.

First of all, the attraction had gotten a paint job inside and out and it looks fantastic. The queue line has been redone and touched up with some much added changes and fixes. Here are a few of the things you may noticed when going through the queue and riding BTM:

  • Repaint
  • Air conditioning in the station with some places in the queue line having it as well
  • The geysers near the end of the ride are all working again
  • The “Falling Rocks” in some of the caves are no longer on the attraction. That’s right, the movement has been taken away from the rocks and they are a stationary part of the ride.
