Disney’s ‘Planes’ falters at box office in opening weekend

planesposterWell, “The Lone Ranger” already bombed this summer, and now “Planes” opened up under expectations so that’s not the best sign in the world. While “Planes” wasn’t a plunging failure, it didn’t live up to what the expected numbers were from studios.

“Planes” pulled in an estimated $22.5 million for its opening weekend, and those aren’t awful numbers by any stretch of the imagination, but it was expected to do better. The weekend bump-up just didn’t happen as many thought it would.

The budget for “Planes” was only $50 million so it doesn’t look as if Disney will end up losing money off it at all.

“The Lone Ranger” had a budget of $215 million, and through Aug. 11, 2013, it had only made $196 million worldwide. That is with a much better success rate overseas, but it is bound to end up as a loss.

Full numbers for the weekend will be out on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, but the estimated totals are now out for the weekend box office.
