Disney, Mears issue statements on Disney Magical Express fatal crash

dmelogoIn an update to the tragic story from earlier on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, both Disney and Mears have issued statements regarding the fatal accident that left a 63-year-old woman dead and two others with minor injuries.

The name of the woman has not yet been released as her family still is to be notified. Her vehicle was hit by a Disney’s Magical Express bus and she ended up being pronounced dead at nearby Celebration Hospital.

The 1996 Buick stopped in the left lane on Epcot Center Drive near Overpass Road around 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The westbound DME bus was unable to stop in time to avoid striking it. Images show that the vehicle had been mostly crushed.

33-year-old David Lee Morales was driving the bus and was interviewed along with passengers on the DME bus as well as other drivers that witnessed the crash. The FHP said that Morales did apply the brakes, but “just couldn’t stop.”

Disney issued a statement on the sad matter:

“We are saddened by today’s tragic accident and offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the driver who passed away.”

Mears also issued a statement:

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the individual who tragically lost their life in this accident. We are cooperating fully with FHP [Florida Highway Patrol].”
