For years and years, there have been rumors of Epcot receiving a replacement nighttime show for Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, but it’s still running nightly. Well, major electrical upgrades are coming to the World Showcase Lagoon and it has a lot of talk starting up.
The Orlando Sentinel has reported that the Reedy Creek Improvement District has approved extensive electrical upgrades to be done to the World Showcase Lagoon at Epcot. These upgrades will actually cost more than $2 million and include having a pipe drilled from the South side of the lagoon and going into one of the islands.
$325,000 has been approved to buy materials which include transformers and switches. An additional $220,000 is going to be used for survey work, engineering, and construction inspection.
Now, this has, of course, led to speculation that Disney is working on a new nighttime show to replaced Illuminations: Reflections of Earth which is almost 20 years old. Disney has not confirmed that at this time, but a spokeswoman did release a statement.
“At any given time, we have numerous projects in varied stages of development across the Walt Disney World resort, and we have nothing to share at this time.”
So, it could be a new nighttime show replacing Illuminations. It could be upgrades and advancements to Illuminations. It could just be Disney doing work on World Showcase Lagoon. Anything more than what Disney has officially said and the seen in the permits filed by Reedy Creek is pure speculation.
There is no timeframe known for when the work will officially start or be completed, and that means for now, Illuminations will continue to run nightly as scheduled.
