On Tuesday afternoon, Disney CEO Bob Iger hosted the earnings call for the company and gave forth a lot of information, but the focus was on one thing in particular – Disney’s new streaming service coming in 2019.
The majority of the 30-minute Q&A session was about Disney’s new streaming service which is set to compete with Netflix. Iger made it clear that this service will not be huge right at the start, but it would continue to grow over the months and years following its launch.
A lot of details were revealed, though, and here is what we now know about Disney’s new streaming service.
Launch Date
While an exact date is not yet known, it is going to make its debut sometime in late 2019.
Price
Iger did not reveal the exact price for the service, but he did say Disney’s streaming service will cost “significantly less” than Netflix. That being said, it is expected to land somewhere in the monthly range of $6 to $8.
Content
This was the biggie and while things may start out somewhat slow, Disney is going to have a massive library on its streaming service over time. Iger made it a point to state that they will rely on the strengths of their properties such as Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar to lead the way, but Fox and Natural Geographic are going to be there as well.
Due to syndication deals which are already in place, there will be some properties which won’t be available at the launch of the streaming service. That includes some of the older Star Wars films but Episode IX will be on there as will everything else being released in 2019 and that includes:
- Captain Marvel
- Frozen 2
- Jungle Cruise
- The Lion King (live-action)
- Toy Story 4
- Dumbo (live-action)
- Avengers 4
- Aladdin (live-action)
- Artemis Fowl
New content will be created for Disney’s streaming service for Star Wars, Marvel, and live-action versions of animated features such as Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone.
There is still some time until Disney’s streaming service launches and becomes huge, but it’s going to happen an today’s earnings call is evidence of it.
