On Thursday morning, Disney revealed the news that so many people had been waiting for and that’s the opening dates for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. With only a handful of months to go for both of them, let’s check out everything we know so far about the new land.
Opening Dates and What Will Be Open
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open as such:
- May 31, 2019 – Disneyland
- August 29, 2019 – Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Galaxy’s Edge will open in two phases with the first including Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run and the majority of the rest of the land. The second attraction will be Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and it is going to open in “phase two” of which we don’t yet have a date.
Bob Iger simply stated that Rise of the Resistance will open at a later date.
Attraction Ride Height Requirements
Both attractions in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will have height requirements, and there is finally confirmation on both of them.
- Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run — 38 inches.
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — 40 inches.
When will FastPass+ and MaxPass availability arrive?
For the opening of Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, there will not be MaxPass/FastPass service for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. For Hollywood Studios, there will not be FastPass+ availability for Smuggler’s Run.
This is not to say that FastPasses will not be available in the future, but for the opening days of both and time into the immediate future, Smuggler’s Run will not have it.
How will Disney handle the lines and crowds?
With Galaxy’s Edge opening in Disneyland first, Disney is doing something very interesting to handle the crowds. For the first 3.5 weeks of the land’s opening, guests will have to make no-cost reservations just to enter the land and enjoy it all. Full details can be found at this link.
Disneyland has been prepping for this for quite some time with the removal of some benches, shrubbery, and rearranging of things to open pathways a bit more.
The reservation system has not yet been announced for Walt Disney World, and it is not confirmed that it even will be. Back when Toy Story Land opened at Hollywood Studios, many Cast Members informed us that they were practicing a lot of methods and different things in preparation for the opening of Galaxy’s Edge.
With two entrances to Galaxy’s Edge in DHS (one on Grand Avenue and one in Toy Story Land), Disney will likely use one as an entrance and one as an exit for the first few months. Expect lots of Cast Members guiding guests where they need to go.
