Closure History Of Walt Disney World And Disneyland Resorts Due To Unforeseen Circumstances

When news that Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort would be closing for the rest of March broke, many began thinking how that hardly ever happens. Well, they are 100 percent right that it hardly ever happens and that is why it is time to check out the closure history of both domestic Disney Parks’ locations.

As we all know, the Disney Parks don’t typically close and are open 365 days a year. After this upcoming week in March of 2020, all of Disney’s theme park locations around the world will be closed at the exact same time.

This unprecedented event has many wondering just how often the domestic parks have had a closure in the past, and here is all the information you need to know.

Disneyland Resort

Disneyland had only had an unexpected closure three times in its history before the coronavirus/COVID-19 brought about the fourth.

  • November 25, 1963 – A day of mourning after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy
  • 1994 – After the tragic and devastating Northridge earthquake
  • September 11, 2001 – The day of the September 11th attacks
  • March 16-31, 2020 – COVID-19

Walt Disney World Resort

Seeing as how Walt Disney World is in the middle of a hurricane zone, there have been a few more unexpected closures for the Florida parks. It still has not been many in its history, but here are all of them.

  • September 15, 1999 – Hurricane Floyd
  • September 4-5, 2004 – Hurricane Frances
  • September 26, 2004 – Hurricane Jeanne
  • September 11, 2001 – The day of the September 11th attacks
  • October 7, 2016 – Hurricane Matthew
  • September 10-11, 2017 – Hurricane Irma
  • September 3, 2019 – Hurricane Dorian (Closed early on Tuesday, reopened Wednesday)
  • March 16-31, 2020 – COVID-19

In 2004, Hurricane Charley also caused an early closure of Walt Disney World parks on a Friday, but all were open again by Saturday.
