With the Olympics having already been postponed once, there is talk that they may not happen in 2021 either. If Tokyo truly does decide to back out of hosting them, the state of Florida wants the world to know that they are willing to step up.
State of Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis issued a letter to the International Olympic Committee saying the 2021 games should be moved from Japan to Florida. As leaders in Japan continue to express concern over the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida is ready to become the host if need be.
Patronis cited the opening of Walt Disney World as well as the “NBA Bubble” as reasons why Florida knows how to do things safely.
“The State of Florida has successfully allowed sports to take place during the pandemic. When most states shut down their sporting events, the city of Jacksonville hosted the Ultimate Fighting Championship (the UFC) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) setup the ‘bubble’ to hold games in Orlando. Moreover, during football season the National Football League (NFL) and college teams were able to compete on Florida soil. Additionally, our international tourist destinations, like Disney parks have been open and operating safely in Florida for some time. In fact, Disney serves as an incredible model for how to run a complex organization in the midst of COVID-19.”
Since the Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando theme parks reopened in July, no COVID outbreaks have been linked to them. The parks are continuing to flourish, and have had no threats of being shut down again.
As of this time, the 2021 Olympics are still on track to take place July 23-August 8 in Tokyo, Japan. While leaders have denied that they are canceling the games, there are whispers that it is possible.
“I am determined to realize a safe and secure Tokyo Games as proof that mankind will have overcome the virus,” said Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
