Just when you think you’ve seen everything that Walt Disney Imagineering, they go ahead and…well…I am Groot.
We all know that Disney is working on the next big thing, but this may truly be it. That flipping Spider-Man animatronic coming to Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure is one thing, but this miniature independent Groot is something else.
Matthew Panzarino of Tech Crunch has detailed something known as “Project Kiwi,” and it includes the Marvel superhero from Guardians of the Galaxy. The independent animatronic robot has been in development for years, and it is coming along beautifully.
This robot isn’t necessarily limited to just Groot as it could be any character, but for now, Walt Disney Imagineering went in this direction. It likely won’t be heading to the parks in the near future due to much more work being needed, but the future is bright.
“Project KIWI started about three years ago to figure out how we can bring our smaller characters to life at their actual scale in authentic ways,” R&D Imagineer Principal Scott LaValley says. “It’s an exciting time for bipedal robotics and with an incredible team and our combination of technology, artistry and magic, we are bringing characters to life that could not have happened anywhere but Disney.”
