As reported by the Montreal Gazette, Cirque du Soleil made the massive layoffs on March 19, 2020, with 4,679 employees being let go. The company is keeping a mere 259 staffers to maintain the “basic operations” needed to plan, sell tickets, and work on future tours.

“As we speak today, there is no revenue coming in for the company and I don’t know when it will come back,” CEO Daniel Lamarre says.

Lamarre said that due to the threat of COVID-19, Cirque du Soleil has had to cancel all 44 of its shows around the world.

“It happened within a week. … We were shut down by cities and countries around the world,” Lamarre said. “As we speak today, there is no revenue coming in for the company and I don’t know when it will come back, which is why we’re doing what we are doing. We have laid off most of our employees and we will keep just a small fraction of employees to be able, whenever the situation is stabilized, to come back in a short period of time.”

Preview shows for Disney’s Drawn to Life were set to begin on March 20, 2020, and the grand opening was to be on April 17, 2020. As of this time, it is not yet known when shows at Disney Springs will officially begin.
